And it’s completely understandable why she’s as hurt as she is. Somerville: It’s completely understandable why Jeevan is as angry as he is. And he made a mistake and now he’s got to go and find something in the middle of the night. And now he’s in a cabin with her, a year later, having lost everyone else he knows. It’s when you’re reminded of the humanity of it-he was just meant to walk this girl home. It’s about these people finding themselves in a dark situation. And so I love that line because it roots us back into what this whole thing is.
As he says, he was only meant to walk her home. And it’s the explosion of a year of slow-burning resentment and frustration, of feelings of inadequacy from Jeevan, that he doesn’t know what he’s doing, and was never meant to do this. It’s the moment that tears them apart really. I imagine that Jeevan has been just so desperate to communicate with somebody who is over 25 years old and has that toolbox of communication skills, that to see Kirsten just keep picking this book he doesn’t like is an affront to his entire being. And it’s not exactly appropriate they can’t understand a lot of the feelings or nuance or irony that adults use. In the pandemic, the thing I’ve noticed about my parenting is that I started talking to my kids like they were adults more. You’re doing the same thing, and it’s shitty over and over again, instead of just being present with me. There is a feeling down in there that’s like, why are you picking that over me? And it’s not just, you’re reading Wikipedia. Somerville: I approached this writing about Kirsten’s relationship with the book as though it was how I feel about my kids with iPads. It’s that thing of, when you try to show your kid a movie that you think is great, and they’re like, “This is stupid, dad.” He’s constantly being rejected by her in the episode. Jeevan’s trying to get back to that feeling of what it was like in the ’80s, and nostalgia, and some John Hughes happiness, and she is just not buying it at all.
I knew there would be something in there. The ask that I gave was: Find us any scenes in Pretty in Pink where people are talking about home.
Pretty in Pink was one option available to us that didn’t cost an arm and a leg because of its relationship to Paramount. We wanted an old movie playing in the background. All it takes is the right prop in the right place at the right time for a lot of feelings to happen this late in the season. What I hear in that moment is, I wish I was a doctor, and I wish I could have saved my brother. Somerville: That little cut, that little eye flick, it’s all I needed to know why he said I’m a doctor-because his brother, Frank, just died. I’m in the middle of this hugely emotionally important moment and then I have to put this jacket on. We’d already shot the outside bit, so it had to match what we cut to. Himesh Patel: The costume was a tipping point for me because obviously Jeevan has to get dressed quickly and walk out the door at the end there. And the costumes are unlike any other costumes in any other episode, which made it special. It never looks like this in the show again as it does at night in the cabin with the fire going. When it comes to this argument, it’s a new feeling. The grips hung this amazing gel on the walls to create that ice feeling and the art department created giant icicles hanging down, and Steve Cosens, our DP, lit only naturally inside of that place. It happened to be buried in snow, but the truth is, it was perfect. We didn’t know what it was going to be like in the dead of winter. Anyway, hear us rant about this and talk about many pleasant topics in gaming as well on a whole nother week of the longest running gaming program on the internet, Orange Lounge Radio! Usually, I'd write something vague here to get you to listen to the episode but let's be real, he was a giant fraking coward who knew he was being an obnoxious little troll and props to Nexus Mods for doing what they needed to do and saying what they needed to say. However one mod made it's way out that ended up getting the creator banned from Nexus Mods. A popular Playstation game was released on PC this week which led to of course, many mods being made available for the game.
